Yellowstone Park and Wildlife Update
Ah, February, here in Gardiner, temperatures are around freezing, and there's another snowstorm on the way. In the park, all the bears are deep in hibernation. This is right around the time when the females give birth to their cubs, while hibernating. The cub, which is about the size of a chipmunk at birth, will nurse and snuggle all winter long. By the time the bears wake up in the spring, the cubs weigh around fifty pounds.
Though I'm not hibernating, February is my favorite month to start dreaming of summer. Luckily, this is the perfect time to start booking activities for our summer season. Whether you're interested the high-adventure rafting in June, or private tours of Yellowstone; The Flying Pig Adventure Company can help you plan a Yellowstone experience that will last a lifetime. Maybe you'll even see a couple of those new bear cubs.
Horseback Rides, Chuck-Wagon Cookouts, Raft Trips, Wildlife Watching, Private Tours of Yellowstone, Trip Planning, and MORE!
Don't wait till the last minute! We sell out most of our trips well in advance.

Enjoy More of the Park: Avoid the Traffic
Don't wait in park traffic in 2010, when you could be enjoying all that Yellowstone has to offer with a little inside knowledge. With construction on some main roads this summer, it is a good idea to plan your trip around these areas. You'll avoid waiting in traffic and excess driving getting around the roadblocks.
Traveling North from Old Faithful and West Yellowstone toward the Mammoth Hot Springs can be tricky. There is serious road construction between Madison and Norris Junction. The road is closed each night from 8pm till 8am the next day. During the day, the road is open, but expect up to 1 hour delay and long lines of traffic.
Solution: Travel the eastern route in the park or plan to stay near the North entrance in Gardiner, MT or at Mammoth Hot Springs. (Did you know the North Entrance is the original and only year round entrance to the park?)
This will alllow you fast access to the biggest area and attractions in the park. Don't miss the Northeast section of the park including the Lamar Valley, where 70% of the park's wildlife spend the summer!

Yellowstone Park Facts |
|
Yellowstone's iconic Bison have a fascinating history in the park and the west.
Once numbering somewhere near 65 million - their numbers were reduced by overhunting and poaching to fewer than 1,000 in 1890.
Today there are approximately 4,000 wild, free-ranging bison in Yellowstone National Park, up from less than 400 in 1967.
Even a casual visitor will usually spot more than a few bison.

Did You Know? |
|
Before 1903, trains would bring visitors to Cinnabar, Montana, which was a few miles northwest of Gardiner, Montana, and people would climb onto horse-drawn coaches there to enter the park.
In 1903, the railway finally came to Gardiner, and people entered through an enormous stone archway.
Robert Reamer, a famous architect in Yellowstone, designed the immense stone arch for coaches to travel through on their way into the park.
At the time of the arch's construction, President Theodore Roosevelt placed the cornerstone for the arch.
The top of the Roosevelt Arch is inscribed with "For the benefit and enjoyment of the people," which is from the Organic Act of 1916.
