We know you are very excited to begin your great adventure to Yellowstone! But before you arrive you may have several questions about what you’ll see and do, and how you will spend your time. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we field here at Flying Pig. Hopefully they will answer some of your own questions. If not, please feel free to give us a call at 1-866-807-0744.
Q. How do we get there?
A. We ‘re located in Gardiner, Montana – the North Entrance to the Yellowstone Park. Gardiner is a small town so you won’t have trouble finding us. Look for our store – a big deck and 2 giant kayaks on the front. From the park entrance drive into town, cross the bridge, and look for us 2 blocks down from the Cenex. From Livingston/ Bozeman Highway 89 South to Gardiner, drive into town and look for us on your right. If you come to the bridge turn-around and go back 2 blocks.
Q. What is your cancelation policy?
A. We have a full-refund 72-hour cancelation policy on all single day activities except private tours. You can change the date and time of the trip with no penalty within 24 hours of the trip. Trips canceled after the 72-hour cancelation period can be rescheduled; the deposit will be forfeited. Multi-day trips, vacation rentals and private tours all have a 60-day cancellation policy. You can cancel and receive a full refund 60 days prior to the trip, if you cancel after 60 days but before 30 days there will be a 50% refund, and if you cancel after 30 days prior no refund will be given.
Q. What does Class II and III mean?
A. Whitewater is rated on a scale form 1 to 5. Class I is flat water, Class V is expert only. Class II and III is intermediate. We like to say that Class II & III means that you are going to get wet, but you will probably not get thrown out of the raft. This river is the perfect introduction to white water rafting!
Q. Can I still go if I don’t know how to swim?
A. Yes! Whitewater rafting on the Yellowstone is open to all levels of swimmers. If you are not a strong swimmer, make sure to tell your guide before your trip begins.
Q. What do we need to bring for Raft Trips?
A. We provide footwear, wetsuits, splash tops and bottoms, and life jackets no extra charge! You need to bring: sunblock, sunglasses, swimsuit or non-cotton shorts and t-shirt, water bottle for full-day trips, and a smile.
Q. What do we need to bring for Horse Trips?
A. You need to bring: close-toed shoes and long pants, a camera and water bottle are optional.
Q. What time do we need to get there for Raft Trips?
A. Please arrive 30-45 minutes prior to your trip departure. Call us if you are going to be late. If you arrive less than 15 minutes before your trip departs, we reserve the right to cancel your trip at your expense.
Q. What time do we need to get there for Horse Trips?
A. Please check-in at the Flying Pig one hour before departure. Call us if you are going to be late. If you arrive late, we reserve the right to cancel your trip at your expense.
Q. How old do children have to be to participate?
A. There is no age limit for our raft trips however, participants must weigh at least 50 pounds. For our horse trips, riders must be at least 7 years old with no experience necessary.
Q. How many people will there be on my raft?
A. We focus on keeping small group sizes. The maximum number of customers on a raft is ten, although most trips there are six or eight. The minimum number needed is two.
Q. Are we going to be able to swim?
A. Yes! Amongst the rapid sets there are sections of calm water where customers can swim. Your guide will tell when it is safe for you to swim. We highly recommend a dip in the Yellowstone.
Q. Will we get wet?
A. Yes! Expect to get wet in the rapids, especially those who sit in the front of the raft! Watch-out for other boats too, sometimes there’s a water fight on extra warm afternoons!
Q. Can we bring our camera?
A. If you camera is waterproof, yes, bring it along. If it is not waterproof we do not recommend taking it as we cannot guarantee it will stay dry. There will be a photographer taking pictures of your raft that you can purchase afterwards. Plus, we do rent dry cases that hold iphone-type devices and make it possible to take pictures without getting your phone wet.
Q. Can our dog go?
A. No. Unfortunately, dogs must remain behind. Please make arrangements for your dog prior to checking in for your trip.
Q. Will we have a guide?
A. Yes! Your raft will have a guide. All guides have been trained in first aide, CPR, and swiftwater rescue.
Q. What animals will I see?
A. Elk, antelope, white tail dear, river otter, and beaver are commonly sighted animals. Bird wildlife such as various ducks, osprey, Bald Eagles, swallows, and other common songbirds are also likely to be spotted. Bears, moose and wolves are seen by the lucky few.
Q. What if the weather is bad?
A. We go rain, snow, sleet, sun, or partly cloudy! Be there on time and we’ll dress you for the weather conditions! Wetsuits, booties, gloves, splash tops, and fleece are provided as needed…for no additional charge!
Q. Where is the ranch?
A. The ranch is 6 miles from Gardiner. We’ll give you a map when you check in at the Flying Pig. It’s a scenic drive on a county maintained dirt road.
