One of our favorite day trips in all of Yellowstone is the drive through the Lamar Valley and then out through the NE entrance to the Beartooth Highway. This famous roadway leads from Billings and Red Lodge, MT to Cooke City, MT and the NE Entrance to Yellowstone Park. Commonly referred to as one of America’s most scenic drives, this amazing road takes you across the Beartooth Mountain range and offers alpine views that will blow your mind.
You will see emerald blue alpine lakes, awesome rocky spires, gorgeous green meadows covered in wildflowers and wildlife galore including the ever-present mountain goats. There are numerous hiking trails and areas to stop and enjoy a picnic lunch while gazing out over miles and miles of mountain views like nothing you have ever seen. This rugged landscape is remote and the weather can change in minutes so it is always good to be prepared with adequate layers and plenty of water if you plan to hike and don’t forget insect repellent!
