Day 1
House Check-in, 3 - 8pm.
Spend the day seeing some of the sites in Yellowstone, go for a hike, soak in a hot spring, see Old Faithful blow its top, do your grocery shopping for the week. Check in, relax, and enjoy one of the most unique houses/cabins anywhere.
Close the evening with a barbeque on the 320 sq foot deck overlooking the Yellowstone River, and watch the sunset on Electric Peak (11,000ft).
Day 2
A full day of whitewater rafting on the Yellowstone River
Your trip will depart just 30ft downstream of your cabin at 9am. Raft class 1-4 rapids and enjoy a riverside picnic lunch on your 18 mile guided voyage downstream. Finish up your adventure by 3pm.
Spend the afternoon and evening at your own pace. Maybe try throwing a line in the water below the house and catch rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, brown trout, or mountain whitefish. Be sure to have a valid Montana fishing license
Day 3
Yellowstone Tour
This will be a FULL day! Your day to be a Yellowstone tourist. Pack a picnic and tour the Lower Loop of Yellowstone Park. See Roaring Mountain, Norris Geyser Basin, the Artist Paint Pots, Upper and Lower Geyser Basin, watch Old Faithful erupt. Then cruise over the continental divide and head towards Lake Hotel.
Find a pullout on the lake shore and have a scenic picnic lunch. Go for a walk on the beach and let the kids get rid of excess energy. Head north towards the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone; stop and check out the Mud Pots and Devil's Caldron, stop at the pullouts in Hayden Valley and watch the wildlife and waterfowl (SKIP the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, you will explore it on Day 5).
Then head back to Gardiner to unwind from being a tourist all day. Don't overdo it! Enjoy Yellowstone, it is not a race!
Day 4
Half Day Horseback Ride
Depart at 9am. You are in for a treat as you cowboy-up at our high mountain ranch. The views are spectacular, the cowboys are real, and the groups are small. Make sure you bring your camera.
After your ride, we recommend a nice long soak in the local Hot Spring (3 miles away) called the Boiling River. Or drive about 30 minutes to Historic Chico Hot Springs for a more refined experience (this is also where owners Geoff and Liza were married).
Yes, cocktails are allowed in the pool. It is very family friendly with two dining options: the poolside grill or the 4 star, nationally acclaimed but casual dining room. Make reservations for the dining room ahead of time!
Day 5
Upper Yellowstone Tour
Tour the upper loop of Yellowstone Park and go for a hike. We recommend starting the day by walking the boardwalks at Mammoth Hot Springs. On your way by stop at the Mammoth Hotel front desk and make dinner reservations for Roosevelt Lodge around 6:30pm. Then head south about 4 miles to the Bunsen Peak trail head; it is located on your left after the waterfall and the entrance to Swan Valley. Hike to the top if you are physically able to do so. The hike is about 1.5 miles each way and provides stunning views from the top of a 8,700ft mountain-you can see 25 miles in each direction!
Head back to the car and drive directly to the Canyon area of the park, 1 hour. Make sure to see the Upper and Lower falls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The Canyon Visitor Center is a "must see" educational stop in the park. Don't skip it and spend an hour or so!
Then head north over Dunraven Pass; you might stop and take the short hike up to Mount Washburn. Push on down the road to Tower Falls. Amazing waterfall! Hike to the bottom if you have a desire, it is strenuous but rewarding (a lot of stairs).
On your way back to Gardiner, heading west now, stop at Roosevelt for dinner or a drink. The porch was Teddy Roosevelt's legendary favorite place to relax in the evenings. But, unlike Teddy you cannot shoot a bison to take home as a trophy. The 45 minute drive back to Gardiner will go fast as the sun sets over Yellowstone. Get home and relax.
Day 6
Family Day / Free Day
The only thing left on your agenda is a 6pm departure for the Cowboy Cookout. Relax, enjoy the house, watch a movie, go for a hike, or to a local beach with a book. Unwind from the last 5 hectic days, really, you can do it!
Day 7
Yellowstone Wildlife Safari
Departs at 7am. Don't worry coffee and hot drinks are provided to keep those eyes open. This will be a highlight for wildlife lovers and natural history buffs. The day includes all transportation, use of high quality binoculars and spotting scopes, a short hike, and lunch.
During the trip, lasting 6-7 hours, you will acquire an astounding amount of information about the park and see a lot of wildlife. After the trip the evening is all yours. This is your last night in the house, so get out a board game, watch the sunset, and enjoy a nice dinner on the deck.
Day 8
Check-out, 10 am.
Enjoy the rest of your trip. Possibly see those last few sites in the park and head down the road with your memories.
